COMMUNITY EDUCATION
CPR SAVES LIVES
Wise Regional Health System Education Department offers training for the members of the community in CPR and First Aid. These classes are taught by American Heart Association BLS Instructors who are employed by Wise Regional Health System, ensuring that “real-life” situations are taught and addressed. There are several standard classes available and special courses can be tailored to meet specific requirements of the audience; such as new parents, teachers, coaches, lifeguards, day care providers, industrial workers, etc.
We offer a variety of standard classes, ranging from CPR for the layperson (Heartsaver) to CPR for healthcare workers (Healthcare Provider) in addition to First Aid and Emergency Response Training. We also offer large classes for community groups and will come to your gathering or workplace. Below is a breakdown of the types of classes we offer. All of our CPR Classes follow American Heart Association and National Safety Council Standards.
AHA Heartsaver Adult CPR
Video and lecture based training on the Chain of Survival (the importance of CPR), and how to recognize and treat heart attacks, strokes, and discusses prudent heart living. Choking, the Heimlich Maneuver and rescue breathing are also covered. This class requires hands-on practice with adult-size mannequins. This class lasts approx. 3 hours and there are no pre-requisites.
AHA Heartsaver Infant and Child CPR
Everything listed in “Adult CPR”, in addition to Child & Infant CPR, choking, as well as the most common causes of pediatric injuries and their prevention. This class requires hands-on practice with child and infant mannequins. This class lasts approx. 3 hours per session and there are no pre-requisites. See class schedule for specific times and dates.
AHA Heartsaver First-Aid
Video and lecture based training includes recognition and treatment of seizures, bleeding and shock, wounds, burns, head and spine injuries, joint and muscle injuries, sudden illness (fainting, diabetic emergencies), poisoning, cold and heat related emergencies. Focus is on recognition, scene safety and control, contacting emergency resources and providing first-aid prior to the arrival of emergency resources. This class lasts approx. 3-4 hours per session and is taught under the National Safety Council. It is recommended to take Adult/Infant/Child CPR prior to this class.
Refresher Courses
Refresher courses are offered for all CPR and First Aid classes. Refresher courses are “shortened” versions of the full class designed to be taken only when your current CPR or First Aid card is valid. Refresher courses assume that you have a basic understanding of the concepts and skills of CPR or First Aid and requires demonstration and practical skills evaluation. If you feel you need a more thorough “review” of your concepts and skills, it is recommended to take the entire course again, instead of a refresher.
Please contact the Education Department at 940-626-1368 to schedule a class.

ADVANCE DIRECTIVES EDUCATION
Who decides your fate when you become unable to make your own decisions about remaining on life support? Your spouse? Your parents? The courts?
The simplest way to ensure your wishes are carried out by those you trust is to prepare your own Advance Directive. An advance directive (Directive to the Physician, family, and surrogate) is designed to help you communicate your wishes about your medical treatment at some time in the future when you are unable to make your wishes known because of illness or injury. These wishes are usually based on personal values. In particular, you may want to consider what burdens or hardships of treatment you would be willing to accept for a particular amount of benefit obtained if you were seriously ill. You are encouraged to discuss your values with your family or chosen spokesperson, as well as your physician.
The Social Services Department is available to educate community groups on all aspects and the planning of preparing your advanced directive. Please contact the Social Services Department at 940-626-1242 to schedule a class for your gathering or community group.
